The America 250 commemoration in McDowell County will pick up steam during the next three weeks, with two events scheduled that are free and open to the public.

On Sunday, there will be a dedication of the Revolutionary War Capt. William Moore cabin on the grounds of Historic Carson House in the Pleasant Gardens community.

Then, the next installment of the America 250 McDowell Speaker Series will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, with a presentation entitled, “Exploring McDowell’s Gold History,” according to a news release from organizers.

William Moore ventured into the upper Catawba River valley in the 1760s along with the likes of John Cathey and Hunting John McDowell, making him one of this area’s earliest settlers. He built a log house near present-day Dysartsvil
