Why do humans have a taste for alcohol? The answer may go back millions of years.

It's called the drunken monkey hypothesis. Humans get their alcoholic appetite from primate ancestors, and UC Berkeley researchers say they may have new evidence to support it.

During field research in Africa, the researchers found that chimps are consuming the equivalent of two alcoholic drinks each day when eating fermented fruits.

The researchers measured the alcoholic content of those fruits and looked for evidence that the chimps were metabolizing it.
