Gov. Kim Reynolds has set a special election for Tuesday, Dec. 9, to fill the seat Mike Sexton vacated to accept a U.S. Department of Agriculture role appointed by President Donald Trump.

Sexton, a Republican from Rockwell City, resigned Sept. 19 from the Iowa House to serve as the state director for USDA Rural Development, which provides financial resources and support for rural communities.

He represented Iowa House District 7, which covers Calhoun, Pocahontas and Sac counties and part of Webster County in northwest Iowa.

Sexton was first elected in 2014 and served as chair for the House Agriculture Committee since 2022. The person elected to fill his seat will serve the remainder of his two-year term, which ends in January 2027.
