STEVENS POINT − The Dreyfus University Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point closed the evening of Sept. 23 after a small kitchen fire.
At 5:04 p.m. Sept. 23, a caller reported a fire at the center, 1015 Reserve St., said Stevens Point Deputy Fire Marshal Justin Malin. The fire was a deep fryer fire that was put out by a fire extinguisher used for cooking fires.
Firefighters cleared smoke from the building and they called Malin in so he could instruct them on what the staff needed to do to get the kitchen back in order. The Portage County Health Department also was called in. The fire extinguisher used has a fine powder that gets everywhere, Malin said.
No one was hurt during the fire, but the Dreyfus University Center was closed until 10:30 a.m. Sept. 24, with the Dreyfus
