Premier Doug Ford’s plan to scrap speed cameras on local roads has put him at odds with Toronto’s mayor and police chief.
“Speed kills,” warned Mayor Olivia Chow. “Torontonians, especially those most vulnerable like children, need to be safe. And we know speed cameras work. And that is why Toronto will always support having speed cameras to make sure our most vulnerable are protected.”
Ford has repeatedly described speed cameras as a cash grab and has vowed to legislate and end to their use.
The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police has come out in support of the speed cameras, insisting they deter speeders. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw told reporters Wednesday that police have a number of ways to deal with speeding, including cameras.
