HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has announced that the benefits to drivers from the state's Hydrogen Vehicle Purchase Rebate (CHEAPR) program will double in October.

According to the department, the CHEAPR rebate was temporarily decreased to $500 during the summer in order to preserve the program's budget while the federal government's electric vehicle tax credit was still in place.

Now that federal tax credit program for electric vehicles is set to end on Sept. 30, the rebate provided by the CHEAPR program has been increased to $1,000.

According to DEEP, since the state began providing rebates for electric vehicle purchases in 2021, the number of electric cars being registered in the state has increased by 293%.
