NEW UTRECHT/BENSONHURST — A PUBLIC LIBRARY THAT ORIGINALLY OPENED IN 1894 COULD SOON BE REDEVELOPED as a state-of-the-art facility with affordable housing.

The NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) have launched the public engagement process for their collaboration on the redevelopment of the New Utrecht Library. They plan a new state-of-the-art library, with 100% affordable housing above it. The New Utrecht Library (1746 86th St.) has been at its present location since 1956, but the institution dates to before the 1898 Consolidation, when it was called the Free Library of the Town of New Utrecht. The existing location needs significant repairs.
