MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Public Health Madison and Dane County issued a public health alert on Wednesday following an increase or spike in drug overdoses in the community.

PHMDC stated there were five confirmed overdose response calls from EMS in the last 24 hours.

The cause of the spike is not known, officials noted. PHMDC stated it could be the makeup of street drugs changed.

Below is a list of things that you can do if you know someone who is struggling with drugs (their wording):

Know the signs of an overdose :

Pale, sweaty or clammy skin

Lips/fingertips turn blue

Slow or irregular breathing: gasping, gurgling, or snoring

Difficult or unable to wake

Always call 911 if you think someone is overdosing
