HURON – Huron County has “challenging budget times” ahead when it comes to budgetary discussions, according to its treasurer. Michael Blumhagen.

Blumhagen presented a report to county council during the Sept. 17 meeting overviewing the county’s financials for 2025 to date and estimated the county could be facing a deficit of about $1.5 million by year’s end.

“We have some challenging budget times ahead of us going into 2026 and beyond,” said Blumhagen. “We’re not going to have the level of surplus that we have had in the past to help mitigate our levy increases.”

According to Blumhagen’s report, Huron County was already in an operating deficit position by the end of June by $355,000 when compared with the 2025 budget.
