(KRON) -- Amazon has reached what the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is calling a "historic" $2.5 billion settlement regarding Amazon Prime subscriptions. According to a notice posted to the FTC website Thursday, the settlement is in regard to allegations that Amazon enrolled millions of customers in Prime subscriptions without their consent.

The company also "knowingly made it difficult" for them to cancel, according to the FTC.

As a result of the settlement, Amazon will be required to pay a $1 billion civil penalty and provide $1.5 billion in refunds to customers harmed by "deceptive Prime enrollment practices." Amazon will also be required to cease "unlawful enrollment and cancellation" practices for Prime.
