In a rare update, Merriam-Webster announced that more than 5,000 new words have been added to its collegiate dictionary.
"For the first time in over twenty years, and only the twelfth time since 1898, Merriam-Webster has published a new edition of its iconic Collegiate Dictionary," the company announced Thursday, Sept. 25.
In a social media post on Sept. 25, the company wrote: "We have some words for you. Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. The NEW Twelfth Edition. Made of paper."
Complete with thumb notches, the deep red-covered dictionary, which weighs five pounds, will be released on Nov. 18. The dictionary is available for preorder now, according to Merriam-Webster.
According to Amazon, where the new dictionary is being presold, a hardback edition costs $32.30, plus shipping and handling costs.
Updated and redesigned for "students, professionals, and word lovers," the Twelfth Edition features thousands of new words.
Readers will still see the classic line drawings, "from a friendly looking 'aardvark' to a prickly 'zoea' (a free swimming planktonic larval form of many decapod crustaceans)," according to Merriam-Webster's release.
What new words are in Merriam-Webster's dictionary?
Of the more than 5,000 words added to the dictionary, some include:
- farm-to-table
- dad bod
- razz
- cold brew
The previous edition of the Collegiate was published in 2003, according to the release.
