MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection identified a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial poultry operation in Jefferson County, officials said Thursday.

USDA animal health officials and DATCP have been working together to quarantine the affected premises. Officials stated that the birds on the property will be killed to prevent further spread, and these birds will not enter the food system.

The H5N1 HPAI virus, which is highly contagious and often fatal to domestic poultry, has continued to circulate in both wild and domestic birds in North America since December 2021. These viruses can also be spread through clothing worn by anyone working with the animals.
