BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WCTV) - After an 8-year-old was shot and killed in July , the Bainbridge community has rallied to support the family. The boy’s youth football team is retiring his jersey on Thursday as a tribute to him.

The mother of the 8-year-old, Jay Powell, said in an interview that she is grateful for the community’s efforts.

“It means so much to me, like I really ain’t got the words to really express how I feel about that because it means a lot to me knowing that people care, not just looking over him, they keeping his name living.”

Two people were arrested and charged, including a 13-year-old relative, following the shooting, as the family continues to grieve the loss.

“He’s gonna always know how much love I got for him. We always tell each other we love each other.”
