ST. LOUIS — The mother of a man who fatally overdosed inside the St. Louis County jail says she believes her son's death was the result of foul play, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court.

Karen Holbrook's son, Brandon Holbrook, died of a fentanyl overdose in September 2022. But, her suit says, a private autopsy raised questions about a wound found on his body and the jail staff's attempts to revive him.

The jail's "customs and policies created a substantial risk of harm to inmates at the Justice Center, including Holbrook," says the suit, filed by Tanner Rolfes, with the firm Rosenblum Schwartz Fry and Johnson.

St. Louis County spokesman Doug Moore said lawyers were reviewing the case.
