TARRANT COUNTY, Texas — The League of Women Voters of Tarrant County is challenging new precinct maps approved earlier this year by Republican commissioners. The five-member commission voted 3 to 2 along party lines to redraw voting lines ahead of the election this year.
The non-partisan voting advocacy group brought in the Texas Civil Rights Project to help fight the redistricting plan in the Tarrant County District Court.
Republican commissioners voted for the changes in the spring, acknowledging that the maps give them an advantage in the November elections for Precinct 2, currently held by Democrat Alisa Simmons. Attorneys defending the plan say the maps are legal, but opponents argue they dilute the power of Black and Latino voters and make it harder for them to elect candidates
