His Majesty's Revenue and Customs ( HMRC ) has announced a major change for thousands of parents receiving Child Benefit payments. For the first time, anyone who pays the high income tax charge on the benefit will be able to do it through their tax code.

The high income tax charge is for parents who earn over £60,000 a year and get Child Benefit. Affected parents have to pay back 1% of their Child Benefit for every £200 they earn over the £60,000 - once they earn over £80,000 a year, it has to be repaid in full.

This is usually done through filing self-assessment tax returns. But HMRC has now announced that parents will be able to pay the high-income tax charge through their tax code instead.
