Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested just days after four people were killed and over 50 were injured after a peaceful protest turned violent in Leh.

Wangchuk was arrested under the National Security Act for allegedly inciting demonstrators.

The arrest also comes a day after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) cancelled the FCRA of Wangchuk's NGO. The CBI had initiated a preliminary inquiry into alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act by Wangchuk's NGO Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, (SECMOL). It cited “financial irregularities” as the reason for the action. The ministry also claimed that Wangchuk incited the mob with ‘provocative statements’.
