Earlier this summer I reconnected with some old friends, Greg and Lori. They shared a harrowing story.

Their daughter had just gotten engaged to a young man named Noah. He was congenial and highly educated but had few real skills beyond the digital world. They wanted to expand his range of experiences, so the four of them went kayaking on a local river.

The river was flowing higher and faster than expected that day, and just a mile or so into their trip, they came around a bend and saw a tree that had fallen perpendicular to the bank. Lori’s kayak hit the tree, the rear of the craft whipped around, and before she knew it, she was pulled under.
