Calgary’s next mayor and council face a formidable and urgent challenge — helping more than 84,000 Calgarians find an affordable home.

That’s the current number of Calgary households in housing need. By 2026, that number will grow to 100,000.

These are community members who are recovering from addiction and homelessness, neighbours who can’t afford their rent, aging parents who can’t find suitable housing and young adults who have job offers but can’t find a stable place to live.

The City of Calgary has made strides with its Home is Here affordable housing strategy. The strategy is well-balanced and thoughtful, but key will be the continued execution and implementation of the strategy, which is a critical oversight function for the mayor and council.
