The UK government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has announced plans to introduce a compulsory digital ID for all adults. Known as the ‘Brit card,’ the system aims to tackle illegal immigration and strengthen border security. Starmer said, “It will make it tougher to work illegally in this country, making our borders more secure.”

The concept is not entirely new. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair proposed a similar system two decades ago, but the plan was blocked by opposition parties. Blair remains involved through The Tony Blair Institute, which has published reports supporting the initiative and estimating setup costs between $1.34 billion and $2.68 billion, depending on the model.
