President Donald Trump signed a presidential memo on Thursday directing U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro to pursue federal jurisdiction for crimes committed in D.C. that allow the death penalty under federal law.

Bondi and Pirro should pursue federal jurisdiction in such cases "to the maximum degree practicable," the memo says.

In the Oval Office, Trump spoke about his recent effort using National Guard troops and federal law enforcement officers to crack down on crime in the city. He argued that D.C. is a “very safe city right now” and would stay that way through full application of the death penalty.
