Sometimes, all it takes is a little something to make you feel good about yourself — or, if not good, at least a little less bad.

Like today, for instance, I got a postcard from a friend visiting the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. He had me in his phone contacts with my name spelled the same way, with a “g” (which would make it German) instead of without the “g,” which is Italian. Boyhood friends who were witness to this frequent misspelling of my name back in grade school used to jokingly call me, “Ca-lahg-knee.”

The sender of the postcard explained that at the time of construction of the two towers shown on the front was completed, the Cologne Cathedral had been the tallest building in the world — a distinction it held for about four years until The Washington Monument was built. It rem
