Former Sen. Claie McCaskill (D-MO) unloaded on New Jersey lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli (R) for working with ally Nicholas De Gregorio to obtain and distribute a mostly unredacted version of Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill's military records and get them to the press.

According to a Thursday report, De Gregorio got his hands on the file in an effort to dig up dirt on Sherrill who is running against Ciattarelli to be New Jersey’s next governor.

CBS News reported that that the National Personnel Records Center, a wing of the National Archives and Records Administration, released Sherrill's full military file — almost completely unredacted –– with internal military files included.

As was explained by Sherrill on MSNBC on Friday morning, those unredacted materials were handed off to a reporter who recognized there was something wrong and he alerted the Sherrill campaign.

According to McCaskill, Ciattarelli getting caught in a ham-handed attempt to smear his opponent could come back to haunt him.

“Congresswoman, I like that you mentioned that this reflects on the judgment of your opponent. I have to believe there's a backlash on this," she began.

"So the fact that they thought this was a good idea, once they realized they had stuff they shouldn't have, the fact they still took it to a journalist, I mean, that's just stupid!" she added. “I mean, you know, let's talk Jersey: That's just damn dumb of him to do that. So hopefully the voters are seeing that.”
