September 26, 1907 - On Sept. 26, 1907, 18-month-old Gladys Dixon followed her older sisters as they walked to school. Their home was near Seward next to the A. & N. track.
Little Gladys had wandered onto the tracks when Marion Lux, locomotive fireman saw her.
Knowing he couldn’t stop the train, Lux threw himself forward and grabbed Gladys just in time. Lux was injured and later given a Carnegie Hero Medal.
