TORONTO – Strength in energy stocks lifted Canada’s main stock index higher in late-morning trading as the price of oil also moved higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 66.35 points at 29,798.33.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 220.58 points at 46,167.90. The S&P 500 index was up 16.77 points at 6,621.49, while the Nasdaq composite was down 10.42 points at 22,374.28.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.70 cents US compared with 71.80 cents US on Thursday.

The November crude oil contract was up US$1.22 at US$66.20 per barrel.

The December gold contract was up US$34.60 at US$3,805.70 an ounce.
