Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday said India will continue importing crude oil from Russia, as there are no international sanctions prohibiting such purchases, dismissing criticism from Western commentators.

“There are no sanctions on Russian oil. If sanctions are to be imposed, they must be comprehensive and apply to all. Only then can we see the consequences,” Puri said during a media interaction.

Puri emphasised that energy is an essential commodity that cannot simply be switched off, warning that any global supply disruption would sharply push up prices and fuel inflation . “Removing the world’s second-largest producer would force either a cut in consumption, food shortages, or severe economic consequences. Prices will skyrocket,” he said.
