The fallout from the recent violence in Leh that left four people dead and nearly 90 injured has sparked a war of words over accountability. On Friday, Leh Apex Body (LAB) co-chairman Chering Dorjay told PTI that the unrest spiralled after youngsters went out of control,' but firmly rejected claims that a 'foreign hand' was behind the incident.

Instead, he squarely blamed the police and CRPF for firing 'indiscriminately' on protesters without exhausting standard crowd-control measures.

From hunger strike to flashpoint

The unrest stems from a 35-day hunger strike led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk , which began on September 10 with prayers and calls for peaceful agitation. LAB had been demanding talks with the Centre over Ladakh’s status and rights.
