A marine biologist says the use of AI in aquaculture could help predict when “disasters” could happen in the industry.

Chair of the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council, Cyr Couturier, who has worked in agriculture and aquaculture, says there is potential to use AI to improve animal health, environmental compliance, and address climate change impacts.

On the latter, he says it could be used to predict mass mortalities that cause fish or shellfish to die. He says the use of AI is “almost already there” when it comes to land-based farms, but use at sea is a bit more complex.

Couturier says the use of AI isn’t about taking jobs out of the industry.

He says it can help the industry avoid some “major disasters,” and it can also be used for recruiting. He notes that there needs to be
