Rick Moranis is making a comeback to acting with the upcoming film "Spaceballs 2." This marks his first live-action role since 1997. Moranis will reprise his iconic character, Dark Helmet, in the sequel to the 1987 cult classic. Production for the film has officially begun, as confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios.

The cast includes several familiar faces from the original film, such as Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and George Wyner. Newcomers to the franchise include Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan. The identities of the new characters are being kept confidential.

Amazon MGM Studios shared a photo of the cast during a table read, captioning it "Spaceballs The Table Read." The film is directed by Josh Greenbaum, known for "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar," and features a script co-written by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.

Details about the plot remain under wraps, with a press release humorously stating that information is "being kept under lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield."

Moranis had previously taken a break from Hollywood to focus on raising his children. He explained in a 2005 interview, "I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97. I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies. So I took a little bit of a break. And the little bit of a break turned into a longer break, and then I found that I really didn’t miss it."

The film is set to be released in 2027, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original "Spaceballs." Mel Brooks announced the sequel in a video message earlier this year, stating, "After 40 years we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But, instead, we’re making this movie." He concluded with the phrase, "May the Schwartz be with you!"
