BMW is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. and more than 136,000 in Germany because of a starter motor defect that could spark fires, the company reports.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, moisture can corrode the starter relay, leading to overheating, short circuits, and fires—even hours after a car is parked. Owners are urged not to park affected vehicles indoors or near buildings until repairs are made.
The recall covers a wide range of models built between late 2015 and 2021, including the 2019–2021 BMW 330i, 2019–2022 Z4, 2020–2022 530i, X3, X4, 2021–2022 430i, 430i Convertible, 2022 230i, and the 2020–2022 Toyota Supra.
