MADISON (WKOW) -- UW-Madison is preparing for what could happen if the federal government shuts down at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1.

Leaders on campus began preparing for this possibility several weeks ago, according to a press release from the university.

UW officials say a government shutdown could affect research operations on campus, depending on the length of the shutdown and the guidance provided by federal agencies.

Here are some of the updates the university provided on Sept. 25:

Existing grants : Faculty and investigators working on federally sponsored projects that are ongoing or employees who are funded by federal grants can continue with their research, unless the granting agency issues a stop-work order requiring that they pause their work.
