Leo has always had his own personality, and that has brought plenty of joy to those around him. But one thing he never quite managed to do was officially become a service dog.

This lovable English Lab “failed” his training program because, as his mom puts it, “the standards were too high.” The trainers also quickly realized that Leo preferred using his intelligence for his own benefit rather than following strict rules.

Even so, his story is far from sad. Today, Leo has found his true calling—being a loyal “service” dog to his mom, just in his own unique way.

A Dog With His Own Rules

Leo spent two years in the Paws for Purple Hearts program, a California-based service dog training school. When it became clear he wasn’t going to graduate, he found his forever home with Samantha Welbo
