COLUMBIA — State election attorneys have committed to forging an agreement with the Justice Department that would prevent sensitive personal information of 3.3 million South Carolina voters from being used for any purpose other than election security.

But attorneys seeking to block the federal government from accessing the data appeared skeptical during a Sept. 26 court hearing, pointing to a number of recent high-profile data leaks they said came from the Trump administration.

Appearing before Circuit Judge Daniel Coble, S.C. Election Commission attorney Mary Elizabeth Crum said the agency is drafting a memorandum of understanding with the department containing strict parameters on what agencies can access the data and its use.
