Five individuals have been arrested by police in Abbotsford, British Columbia, for allegedly crossing the border illegally from the United States into Canada. The arrests occurred between September 24 and 25, 2025, during three separate incidents involving border running.

The Abbotsford Police Department reported that four of the suspects were handed over to the Canada Border Services Agency. One individual was taken into custody due to an outstanding warrant. The motives behind these crossings remain unclear, according to police officials.

“These arrests highlight the vigilance and adaptability of our frontline officers,” the Abbotsford Police Department stated in a social media post. “From traffic stops to border-related incidents—no two days are ever the same in policing.”

Border runners may include legitimate asylum seekers who are eligible to apply for refugee status. However, some may have criminal intentions, as outlined in the Surrey Police Service policy manual. Potential criminal activities include illegal entry into Canada and smuggling of goods such as alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or firearms.

The police also noted that people smuggling could involve cases of parental abduction or individuals attempting to enter the country without notifying border authorities.

Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activity near the border. In emergencies, individuals are advised to call 911, while non-emergency situations can be reported to the Abbotsford Police non-emergency line.
