Most of the time, you can expect a movie adaptation to condense the events of a book. It’s pretty common for books to be made into movies, and given books usually take numerous hours to read (say, if they're at least 300 pages), while the majority of movies hover around the two-hour mark (and only sometimes exceed three hours), books are often more of a time commitment.

But if the source material is short enough, or it’s a novella/short story rather than a novel, or if the movie just wants to expand a bunch of stuff, then sometimes, the adaptation ends up taking longer to get through.
