NORFOLK, Va. — Two tropical systems, Humberto and Imelda , will remain well offshore of the East Coast this week but still bring notable coastal impacts, particularly to the Outer Banks.

Of the two, Hurricane Humberto is the stronger system—a major hurricane expected to pass west of Bermuda while staying hundreds of miles east of the East Coast. Even at that distance, Humberto will generate long-period swells beginning Monday, with peak impacts Tuesday and Wednesday.

These swells will create a heightened risk of dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves, which could cause ocean overwash along Highway 12 on the Outer Banks.
