Washington — Congress appears to be barreling toward another government shutdown , with President Trump and congressional Republicans at odds with Democrats over the path forward for averting a lapse in federal funding .

Mr. Trump said Sunday that a shutdown is likely , rejecting Democrats' push for Congress to permanently extend enhanced tax credits for Americans enrolled in health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, which expire at the end of the year. The president met with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries at the White House on Monday, but the meeting ended without a breakthrough.
