Carlos Mendoza will return as the Mets manager in 2026, general manager David Stearns said on Monday, a day after the team was eliminated from postseason contention with a Game 162 loss to the Marlins.

Beyond Mendoza's return, Stearns said the team will make decisions on its coaches in the coming week after "an evaluation of our entire coaching staff."

That Mendoza's return would be in question would have been unthinkable just a few months ago. Mendoza led the Mets to a surprise run to the NL Championship Series in 2024, and the Mets surged out to the best record in the Majors on June 12, when they were 21 games over .500 at 45-24 and led the NL East by 5 1/2 games over the Phillies.
