Brooke Rollins, President Donald Trump's agriculture secretary, is apparently worried that the administration got outsmarted by China. That's according to a photo taken over the shoulder of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of a message she sent, and flagged by Rohit Chopra, the third director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The photo by The Associated Press was taken at the United Nations General Assembly last week.

"This photo shows the Treasury Secretary reading a text from the Agriculture Secretary. She's worried China has outmaneuvered the US by buying up Argentine soybeans at the expense of our farmers, even as the Administration plans to bail out Argentina with billions of dollars," Chopra said, showing a photo of Bessent reading the text message over his phone.

"When the Trump admin's policies are so bad that Cabinet secretaries are texting each other like 'Wait, are we destroying agriculture?' Spoiler: Yes. Yes you are," wrote the House Democrats on the Agriculture Committee.

"So let me get this straight. Trump gets into a trade war with China. China stops buying American crops. Argentine farmers fill the gap, screwing US farmers out of billions. Trump then sends $20 billion to help out Argentina's economy. How is this winning? What am I missing?" asked Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) on X.

"You had me at, 'China has outsmarted Trump,'" quipped Jody Graf, a retired director of a charter school.

"It sort of concerns me that Brooke Rollins is explaining to Todd Bessent that Argentina pantsed us and gave China more leverage after he bailed out Javier Milei as if she thinks he's not aware," said national security expert Marchy Wheeler on Bluesky.

She noted reporter Judd Legum, who pens the Popular Info newsletter, pointed out on Monday that the "$20 billion taxpayer-funded rescue package for Argentina is a gift for a hedge fund manager with personal and professional ties to the Treasury Secretary."

"Citrone, the co-founder of Discovery Capital Management, is also a friend and former colleague of Bessent—a fact that has not been previously reported in American media outlets. Citrone, by his own account, helped make Bessent very wealthy," Legum quoted from his report on Bluesky.

Social impact investor Matt Greenfield noted, "It would be much cheaper for US taxpayers to just give Bessent’s buddy $500 million."
