More than two decades after being closed to the public, a small East Oakland park is getting a much-deserved makeover.
Over the weekend, Oakland city leaders broke ground on renovations at Tyrone Carney Park, a half-acre lot located in the Sobrante Park neighborhood. With $3.5 million in city and state funding, city officials plan to restore the park by building new play areas, fitness equipment, paved walking paths, a new lawn, and other landscaping features. The park is expected to reopen next summer
“I am proud to celebrate this exciting step forward in our effort to build a safer and more vibrant East Oakland,” Mayor Barbara Lee said in a press statement.
