MESQUITE, Texas — A North Texas father is behind bars, charged in the death of his infant child, police said.

According to the Mesquite Police Department, around 5:05 p.m. on Sept. 18, officers responded to assist the Mesquite Fire Department on a fire call in the 5800 block of Northwest Drive. There, officers were told about a small child who was unconscious and not breathing, police said.

"Officers arrived on scene and noted a small infant lying on the ground with a bluish color," a police report states.

The department said officers began lifesaving measures on the infant until Mesquite firefighters arrived to take over the attempts to save the child.

Mesquite PD said it launched an investigation after the injuries came to light.
