CLEVELAND -- Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch made sure to emphasize that Monday’s workout at Progressive Field was optional, even suggesting that players take advantage of a day of rest after a grueling September.
Instead, nearly the entire roster showed up.
Hinch seemed to figure that would be the case. The alternative is staring at the walls in the hotel room.
“It kills a couple hours during the day and guys can get a couple hours of work in,” Hinch said.
There were also some new faces on the field as the Tigers prepared for Tuesday’s Wild Card opener against the Cleveland Guardians.
Right-hander Brenan Hanifee, a candidate to be added to the playoff roster, was at the workout. So was catcher Tomás Nido, who is expected to serve as the emergency third catcher on the taxi squad.
