The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to learn about residential schools and continue to work toward “meaningful reconciliation” with Indigenous peoples, Hastings County’s warden says.

County council met Sept. 25 in Belleville. Many councillors and staff wore orange t-shirts in advance of the federal statutory holiday; the county flew the “Every Child Matters” flag through September.

“We take this time to pause and reflect on the tragic history and lasting impacts of Indian residential schools in Canada,” Warden Bob Mullin said. “We honour the survivors who carry these stories, as well as their families and communities who continue to live in this intergenerational legacy.
