The sexual assault suspect arrested in what Mounties said was as failed To Catch a Predator scheme by a group of Airdrie youths was granted bail Monday.

But Justice Harry Van Harten said Zain Alnoor Merchant can only be freed on strict conditions if he obtains an ankle monitoring bracelet.

“You will not be released from the Calgary Remand Centre until the ankle bracelet is affixed,” Van Harten said.

The judge also said Merchant would have to be released to an individual defence counsel Rebecca Snukal proposed as a surety, who will be required to transport Merchant to an approved residence.

He’ll be under house arrest at that time, with some exceptions, and is not to communicate with any minors, including his alleged victim.
