Why we observe a day for truth and reconciliation and events around Calgary

Calgarians are set to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Tuesday, a federal holiday to honour survivors of Canada’s residential school system and their families, while commemorating the children who never returned home.

The day stems from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action, contained in its final report released in 2015, one of which called for a national day of commemoration.

The date is also colloquially referred to as Orange Shirt Day, a movement that began to take shape in 2013 after survivor Phyllis Webstad shared her story of having her orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school in British Columbia when she was just six
