PROSPECT HEIGHTS — Lt. Sulu will navigate directly into the grand lobby of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library next Monday for a conversation about the transformative power of books.

Actor, author and activist George Takei, who played the efficient and swashbuckling navigator Sulu in “Star Trek: The Original Series” and subsequent movies, will discuss the vital importance of books at the Central Library’s event, “Unscripted: A Night Against Censorship.” Takei and librarian Adeeba Rana will discuss the trend of censorship, particularly of books about the LGBTQ+ community and about people of color.

The event is part of Banned Books Week, of which Takei is honorary chairman for 2025. The talk, set for Monday, Oct. 6, is free and open to the public, but registration is required
