RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - 100 million Americans have some type of liver disease, according to the American Liver Foundation .

The liver is the second-largest organ in the body, located under the rib cage on the right side. It processes what you consume and breaks it down into nutrients your body uses.

October is also Liver Disease Awareness Month.

“Liver disease can affect anybody,” VCU’s Dr. Richard Sterling said.

Dr. Sterling is the chief clinical officer of the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health, a global leader in clinical and translational research and care for patients with liver disease and related metabolic disorders.
