Brendan Darby was hitting balls at the University Golf Club on Oct. 17, 2022, when he heard several bangs.
At first, he thought it was fireworks, given Halloween was just two weeks away. But when he turned toward the bangs, he saw a man trying to get away from two shooters dressed in dark clothing.
“I saw the victim was running away. He was headed east. He was trying to run,” Darby told Justice Warren Milman and 12 jurors in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday. “By the time I saw him, he was going down.”
Darby was testifying at the trial of Balraj Singh Basra, charged with first-degree murder in the fatal 2022 shooting of Vishal Walia in the golf course parking lot at 9:49 a.m. that day.
