SUMTER, S.C. (WIS) - He was known as the “Fighting Gamecock,” a Revolutionary War general whose fierce spirit helped shape South Carolina’s role in America’s independence.

Now, a revamped exhibit at the Sumter County Museum is honoring the life and legacy of General Thomas Sumter — the man behind the name that defines the county, the city, and even one of the state’s most storied institutions.

Historians say nearly every battle in the American Revolution connects in some way to South Carolina. For Sumter residents, the ties feel especially personal.

“We try to make the past come to life,” said Michael Bowman of the Sumter County Museum. “He’s our namesake. He’s the face of Sumter, the Gamecock city.”
