SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Starting Monday, Bay Area Rapid Transit is adding more train cars to its busiest lines to accommodate a surge in ridership.
BART has increased the number of cars on its Yellow Line, which runs from Antioch to San Francisco International Airport, from eight to nine cars. The agency is also extending some trains on the Red, Blue, and Green lines to meet demand.
BART's ridership increased by 10% in August compared to the previous year, and the agency recently recorded its highest single-day ridership numbers of the year.
The transit agency's spokesperson, Chris Filippi, noted that a rise in ridership is due in part to new trains and enhanced safety measures, including new fare gates that deter fare evasions and other unwanted behaviors.
